Messages - Hal 2000

The Dantor World / Waiting
June 16, 2006, 07:15:23 PM
Hal stayed there in the sand, wheels retracted, the cover closed on them, as he waited for something to happen.  He had the newer black colored shell, and waited silently.  The brilliant blue glow of the screen shone bright as he waited, 2 computerized eyes, and a computerized mouth appeared on the blue screen, the little white spot on the case showing the microphone's whereabouts.  The speaker was hidden in the case as were a pair of phasers.  He'd been working on a grappler arm/ laser system, and fudging over where to mount it.  He waited silently, playing games against himself.

Hal chose this moment to escape from the quarreling 2, and zipped away, wheels down as low as possible, and motors whining heavily.  He headed for any place but there.  Wheels threw sand everywhere.  He switched on some flying systems, and soared into the sky.

"Don't squish me." Hal said.  He didn't fancy the thought of being smashed.

Something whirred, having to hover every so often to get out of the sand.  Hal had come a long way from the gardens, and looked it: there was mud caked on his black chassis, sand covered his monitor face, what looked like a small flower was laying on top of the monitor, and he was grumbling angrily about sand and mud at the top of his computerized voice.  The motors growled loudly as he bogged down in the sand again.  Hal cursed, most rudely, as he hovered again and spun the sand out.  There were 3 distinct wheels showing.  He yelped as he landed "face first" in the sand, and couldn't move.  "A little help here?  Anyone?  Hello?" Hal asked, spinning 2 wheels, the drive wheels, and swiveling his steering wheel in back.  The grumbling droid seemed smart, but just wasn't built for the sand.  "Um, hello!?  Would someone please help me out here?  I don't fancy finding out if I'm waterproof the hard way." Hal said.  He spun the wheels as fast as he could, torque rolling onto his side.  "Now I can see you.  Don't worry, I'm not going to fire weapons, I turned those off already.  I just need a little help.  I don't weigh much.  Would someone please tip be back onto my wheels?"

"You called?" Hal said, trying to speed his way through the sand, getting more all over his shiny black case than he pushed onward.  Hal's microphone had picked these things up way far out there, as he spun the motors, high centered, and grumbled, retracting the wheels and hovering a mere inch over the ground.  "Sorry bout that.  Low ground clearance, a design flaw never wanted to have fixed.  Makes rocketing around starships easy, but sand, I have to hover for.  I hate sand!" he said randomly, spinning his wheels in mid air, throwing sand out.

"Thank you." Hal said, having picked this up on the microphone which was wobbling dangerously on top of the monitor, and had all sorts of gunk on it.  Hal, therefore, could hear very well.  It also helped that the speaker which he used to shout out at people was louder than normal.  A result of Hal's computerized stress.  He looked a little worse for the wear, and probably wouldn't have lasted much longer as he'd started to overheat.  Hal tried hovering, firing sand everywhere.  "Sorry!" he said quickly, as he lifted off to the person's eye level, hovering gently.  The microphone looked a little damaged, and there was dirt on the camera lens, but Hal would continue on.  A whine came from the electric motors that drove him onward, and he spun sand everywhere as the 3 little wheels extended, just before he landed.  "I'll be back.  Just gotta recharge quickly.  And repair a little."  Hal said, speeding off into the nearest clump of vegetation.

He came out with the black shining, and nothing covering him.  There wasn't a single speck of dirt on him, and he hovered out, gliding upon the wind, landing gently on the ground down below.  He yelped as he wobbled, nearly tipping except for his spinning the motors forwards and knocking himself to the ground.  "I don't know how you people can stand that tall and not worry.  I get jumpy at those heights." he said, retracting the wheels and folding the wheel covers down to keep the sand out.

The Dantor World / Dantor Gardens
May 02, 2006, 01:08:10 PM
A shrill whirring was heard as Hal 2000 rolled gently through the gardens, following pathways.  "Plants get gummed up in my wheels." he said, practically speaking to the air.  He clicked a switch inside him and floated a solid 6 inches off the ground, all that he was truly comfortable with.

"Droids serve their own purpose.  Their purpose is to exist, to perform whatever functions were programmed into them, and replace Humans.  That is what I think Droids are supposed to have as a purpose: To replace the imperfect humans that would normally have our job, such as fighting, or building things, or even flying starships.  We, being droids, are stronger, smarter, and better all around than Humans.  Even I, though I'm small and different, can lift more than the average human.  I can perform math equations that most humans would require calculators and data pads for.  I'm also capable, however, of making myself more human, by programming in occasional mistakes, turning off programs that make me better, and others."

"Understood." Hal said, landing on his 3 wheeled chassis.  He turned slightly, then asked, "How about one little race?  Just for fun?" Hal was ready for it, knowing that wheels might be a help, might be a hinderance.

"I'll take the new one.  I don't mind black, it's just green's my favorite.  Weird, I know, for a machine to have favorite colors, but right now, anything's possible." Hal said, the glare of the sun or moon, he couldn't tell, glancing off the screen, making it hard to see.

"I fly." Hal said, firing up the hovering systems to get a better aim.  He switched the phasers on and burned through the target.  Wincing with the computerized face, he tried something new.  He knew there was a CDROM drive there, and super volted the motor.  He spun a CD at super speeds, opened the door like normal, and watched it fly into the second target.  There was a mighty loud sound, then the shattering sound of a CD on the rocks behind.  "I knew I had that feature still.  I got a good look at the body before, and I saw the CD drive.  Does more damage, it does, to fire a Disk at people.  It hits, shatters into ballistic pieces, and harms more people."

Hal 2000 sat there, a green case glinting.  He sped forward, stopping in front of HK47.  Something sparked, and the monitor went dark on one side.  "Oh, not again!" he grumbled, switching things off and powering up.  The monitor sprang to life as his wheels retracted, and dropped the little sentient droid on his keyboard, rather hard.  "That will be the last time that happens, I think." Hal said, dropping the wheels again, raising up off the rock underneath him.  Wheels spinning, he went absolutely nowhere!

"Transfer it all.  Just remember to swap the motors for something quick and nimble.  Does it come in green?" Hal asked, a grin on his face.  "And can I keep the laser system?  I much prefer it for many reasons, and one is that I can burn through walls, and still stun those 'meatbags' as you said.  I also am not used to phasers.  I've only recently learned how to use one." Hal said, reaching back to reconnect wires and raise the laser for easier removal.  It came out neatly.  "You see, right now, everything runs off of motors and electricity, no hydraulic stuff.  Makes repairs easier cause otherwise I'll end up with a leaky piece and short out.  I'd rather short out due to my miswiring rather than liquid."

****Firing Range****

Hal wondered if he still had the laser system.  "HK47, do I still have the laser system?"  He turned, facing a target.

Hal yelped, as he heard the 3 'death letters' spoken aloud.  "So long as I stay in this case, I don't mind being modified.  I've done a little tinkering of my own, adding some stealth to me, but it only works on rare occasions, and it's patchy.  Also, my wheels are the perfect size.  Any smaller and I will drag across the ground.  Any bigger and I can't accelerate to full speed to catch up or out-run anyone or anything.  My web-cam laser is capable of being upgraded, but I must be careful: it's being a bit twitchy, and goes off at the worst possible moments." Hal said, as he worked his way to HK47.  "And if I may ask, what happened between you and Mr. Brish there?  I almost overheated in worry for you.  Course, I've decided I would go here unarmed as to keep you worry free, and also avoid getting in a disagreement with another who wouldn't prefer having a laser fixed on them." Hal's computerized face broke into a grin, as he slid the compartment lid back, but couldn't raise the laser.  "A little creative sabotage and it stays down.  I pulled out a few wires from the connectors, keeps the laser where it belongs."
