U.S.S. Evolution / Mission 3: "Time is of the Essence"

"Sir! I have some Engineering experience. Let me go help down there - unless we get this working the helm's dead anyway." James called to the Captain. After the explosion in Engineering, they were obviously going to be low on people down there, and they would need everyone they could get their hands on.

James hit the manoeuvring thrusters, turning the ship a full 180 degrees while not altering their course or speed at all. "Ship facing about!"

Time for a bit of fancy flying... James thought to himself. To his knowledge, not many, if any, people had attempted what he was about to do in such a large ship, but he was confident in his skills.

He sent the ship into a contant roll, completing a full circle in an average of 6 seconds, and then concentrating hard on the controls sent the ship swooping through the battlefield, over and around other ships, all the while spinning. =/\="Helm to Engineering, try and keep our structural integrity up!"=/\= He didn't have time to be polite or explain to Engineering what he was doing, trying to keep the ship from crashing into another and keep it in one piece was  taking up all his concentration.

Just as the rear torpedoes were fired, a close explosion above an to the port of the ship knocked it off course, almost making the torpedoes miss. The lights flickered on the bridge and throughout the ship, as various systems were damaged.
"Ah!" James exclaimed, as he was jostled about by the explosion so much he nearly fell off his chair. Regaining his balance, he tried to bring the ship onto a stable course.
((Better? :P I was thinking that we could have some boarding craft attach themselves to us at some point, liven it up a bit.))

James looped around one of the Heraani ships, causing a number of torpedoes previously chasing the Evolution to hit it instead. Sweat was starting to drip down his head now as he concentrated on piloting the ship.

"Aye Sir!" James said, turning in his chair to face the helm. His hands darted across the controls - he had always preferred to pilot a starship manually in sublight. The Evolution banked quickly but graciously, and sped faster towards Earth. James tapped a few keys, and ran his hand up one of the meters, raising the Warp Speed to the Emergency Maximum level, then keyed the "Initialise" button.

"Maximum warp engaged, Captain!" he said, monitoring the warp field.

It was odd that after being transferred from the Home Fleet around Earth to Expansion Fleet that he was now on a mission back to Earth, he reflected.

"Aye, Captain." James said, stopping the ship's spin and flying straight away from the battle. He brought the ship round smoothly, and flew full impulse towards the battle.

"Commander, fire when you're ready." he said, preparing to turn the ship about.

"Aye ma`am." James responded, as he began working on his controls. He opened a comm channel to McKinley station;

=/\="McKinley Station, this is the USS Evolution. Requesting clearance for departure."=/\=

=/\="Clearance granted, Evolution." =/\= came the cheery voice of the station commander. =/\="Thanks for your help back there, and good luck. McKinley out."=/\=

The docking clamps on the Intrepid-class' hull released, and the ship swam smoothly out of dock.

"We're clear of the station, Commander." he reported.

James tapped the controls on his console, manipulating the ships drives to comply with his instructions. "Course set, Warp factor two engaged."

The lights around the ship were tinged red and there were members of the crew bustling about everywhere, making preparations for the fight to come, but the Bridge seemed oddly quiet as the crew waited for the ship to arrive at Saturn, and the fight to begin. James broke the silence, announcing that they had arrived.

The ship dropped out of warp, and James manoeuvred it to come into formation with the rest of the Fleet on the dark-side of the planet.

((Aye, I've been meaning to move it along a bit...))

The ship slowed, being brought back to it's previous Warp speed before the warp core overloaded. "Captain; Current ETA to Earth is 39 Minutes!" James shouted, probably a little louder than was necessary.

The now desperate Heraan managed to get in a few more shots at the Evolution, and the EPS conduits in Engineering near the console James was working at blew, throwing him back and burning his hands and face.

~Ouch~ was all he could think before losing consciousness.

OFF: Thought I'd try and get this going again...

"Aye Sir." James said as he stood and rushed to the turbo lift. The ride down towards Engineering was painstakingly slow to him. Every second counted.

As he stepped into Engineering, he began yelling orders to the crews there. "You! Get the wounded to sickbay! Ensign! Take him and her and isolate the weapons from the shield grid! You four! Start setting up an EMP field to protect the weapons. You two; you're with me."

"Er, Sir, but-"

"No time for arguing! The Captain says I'm in charge down here so do as you're told! NOW!" He didn't wait for a response, and lead the two that he had called over earlier over to the main power control near the base of the warp core.

"We need to start transferring power from the core, and divert at least ten percent to the deflector."

"But Sir, if the core loses too much power, it'll shut down, and we'll be stuck without warp speed for hours trying to get it back online."

"I know crewman, but we don't have a choice."

James brought the ship out of warp as close as he could do to the battle zone without risk of crashing into another ship upon exiting warp. "Initiating Offensive Manoeuvre Omega-2!" He said, letting the LCdr know so that she could make maximum use of the weapons.
