"I mean no disrespect if you don't approve of what's going on, but I already have orders from Flag Admiral Paris himself. This AI is to be finished ASAP."

"Um, sure. I guess this pertains to you too, Hermes. The Starfleet Engineering Corps has asked me to come here to oversee the programming of a new AI for the Evolution. Seeing how you are an AI, I guess you could help out."

Tom taps his commbadge.

"Admiral, you're welcome to have a look around, but right now, we're conducting the creaton of a new artificial intelligence. Seeing how this has only been dabbled in at the Daystrom Institute, I doubt there's much your team could do."

"I'm sorry, but I don't recongize your authority. I have orders from Starfleet Command itself, so this project will continue. Durandal is now sentient. Halting the project would compromise the life of a sentient being, and you wouldn't want that, would you?"

"Now, Durandal, my name is Tom. This place is called Avalon Station."

"This is amazing! I've worked on AI's before, but I've never actually seen the birth of one!"

The ominous voice of Orpheus then resounds in the room.

"Orpheus? How did you get here?"

"Good. Now, as much as I would like to be able to just duplicate this Orpheus version and work from there, every time we tried that back at the Daystrom Institute, the AI de-rez'ed within days. Apparantly a clone of an AI suffers degradation in the primary subroutines when duplicated, so we'll need to start with just a duplicate of the matrix and build the subroutines from scratch."

"Well, we are going to be combining certain aspects from both your Corporation-based matrix and Orpheus' Starfleet matrix. But the new AI will need a father figure, since he will be young, after all. Your knowledge of artificial intelligence will also be very useful."

"I'll be busy working here, on Durandal. I'll try to make i if I can, but I can't promise anything."

As Fisher leaves, Kreiser goes back to work.

"Sure, I've got all the time you need, Admiral."

Tom takes Durandal offline for the time being.

The team worked for two days, Kreiser went 36 hours straight. By the time he finally gave up, he had a basic matrix with personality subroutines installed. He pressed a button, and for the first time, activated the AI which was to be named "Durandal".

"Well, not exactly. He's out of contact right now, since the Rivendell is out on assignment, if I'm not mistaken. However, Starfleet Command has approved this project and wants this AI programmed as soon as possible. We do have a bare-bones version of Orpheus with us, which we will be basing the AI off of."

Kreiser and several associates walk into Computer Control, a sub-section of the Engineering department. Kreiser looks around for the head engineer present.

"Admiral Detrell? Commander Morrow? I'd like to speak with an engineer."

"Oh, not again, Orpheus. We went over this the last time I was here. I would love to indulge your wishes, but Starfleet's orders supercede your wishes. As bureaucratic as this may sound, if you have a complaint, take it to the nearest Federation representative. Until then, this continues."

Tom runs in quickly, carrying a padd.

"Sorry I'm late, Admiral, but this is a big station...
