Fleet Admiral Karelia - Central Park, New York City, Earth

Karelia walked slowly down the cobblestone path, breathing deeply the fresh air of the park while he still could. His hand was wrapped loosely around Julia's as she walked beside him. They had both taken their long-awaited leave time here on Earth, anxious to spend time on humanity's verdant homeworld after being given their newest deep-space assignment. Will had a meeting with Admiral Janeway in about thirty minutes, and considering her past circumstances, she had a personal interest in Starfleet's latest venture. Flag Admiral Paris had asked Janeway to accompany the permanent admiralty to Vernemeton Station, the new deep-space outpost in the Delta Quadrant.

It was important to Karelia to make that meeting, but that was thirty minutes from now, plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. "So," Will asked with a smile. "What do you think of our new assignment? We thought Avalon was far from home, but this is taking 'frontier outpost' to a whole new level."

<Karl, walked down the city streets and made his way to the Garden taking in the memories of mischeif he used to cause his friends and family. He wasnt watching where he was going and bumped into someone, as he turned around to apologize he saw it was Admiral Karellia and Admiral Rellek>

"Oh im sorry." was all Karl was able to get out as he noticed he accidently bumped into his superior's accidently and scrambled a hasty salute.

Admiral Julia Rellek - Central Park, New York City, Earth

** Julia chuckled at the Lieutenant.** "At ease and you may be on your way."

**As they walked a bit further Julia looked into Will's eyes and she was certain that she could see into his soul. Everything that they had gone through in the last couple of months had done nothing but bring them closer together.**

"Well, it certainly is a long way from earth but someone has to expand the frontier and i just assume it be us. But Will i must admit, Avalon always seemed so far from everything. But now that i have you in my life im not so concerned about being far from earth. My grandmother was also in Starfleet, back when portions of the Alpha Quadrant was still part of the great unknown, and she used to tell me that home is where the people you love are not the rock that you happened to be born on. So i'll think of it that way too. My home is whereever you are Will. And even though earth is a great place that i love to visit. Our home can be the great frontier."

Fredrick Dwight entered the small Pub and looked around, he had been on starbase and some ships, but still, he was shocked at how, here he was, in the middle of space and on the frontier. He wondered what his future might hold for him. He was looking forward to the future, he had just finished his final classes for the academy and he was now ready for what the universe will undoubtedly throw at him. He was looking forward to getting to know the crew of his new assignment, but... here he only shook his head, in his eagerness to be ready for his post, he had misread the reports, and he would now be waiting for the ship to come to him, he had arrived before the ship, he just hoped they could handle it without the chief engineer. He blinked as he saw the windows, and the nebula outside them, and for a moment he was blown away by the beauty of it all. So much so that he forgot to reprehend himself for being egotisical about his new posting.

He saw an empty table by the windows, and he wondered why not as many people were enjoying the view, but he didn't want to lose his seat that he saw so he moved right over to it, around his neck, purring relaxingly in his ear, a half asleep feline was curled up around his neck. "Okay Cochrane, here we are... are home away from home... almost." All he got was a small sound, he was unsure if it was an agreement or not... but he wasn't too sure, after being told that the father of the once kitten was a strange feline at times.

However he sat down and soon was looking at a menu that a waiter had dropped by, he didn't see what he thought about the feline, after all, if Data could have a cat survive the D's adventure, why not bring his companion along as well... who knows... he might get some nice alien rodent presents on his tour of Duty, maybe even get to discover a new species completely, all he knew was time was on his side at the moment, a new starbase, a new ship... and the wide unknown, so much technology has advanced just in his life time that he wondered what it would look like by the time he was a Captain of his own space ship he thought to himself and he continued to look out the window at the magnificent nebula.

Lt Urban - New York City

"Thank you, Ma'am." Karl said as he hurried off, mumbling to himself on how much of a stupid stupid mistake that was.

"Sure hope they wont be going on the Concordia or I may be in sever trouble. After all im in charge of their protection while onboard." Urban quietly said to himself in a half mumble as he hurried to the Concordia.

Concordia

<Urban transported onboard the Concordia and went to make sure his wife and daughter were settling into the new ship. He walked along the corridors nodding his approval as he quickly went to his quarters>

<Their he found his wife and daughter sprucing up the rather bland quarters quite nicely, he went in and gave his wife a kiss. Then patted his daughters back as she went back to work>

"First day and I already ran into two admiral's ill be protecting while they are onboard. Im surprised I wasnt thrown in the brig." Urban said falling onto the couch.

"Oh dont worry, why would they worry about a Lt who was assigned to the flagship. Im sure they have better things to do." his wife kindly said as she went about her business.

"I know, I need to go and make sure the tactical systems are up and make sure the armory is stocked and everything else sense I dont know if I have a assisttent yet." Urban said sluggishly as he got up and exited his quarters.

<He continued to walk as he found the turbolift and then entered>

"Bridge." Urban called to the computer as it started to move as a sign of acknowledgement.

<Urban walked out of the turbolift and onto the bridge where he saw several engineers tripple checking their work, he went to the Tactical station, their he entered his command code and started to make sure everything was alright should something arrise, then he made sure the armory was stocked and loaded as he went through the computer to double check everything, after 30 minutes he locked out the tactical station and went down to make sure that every weapons locker was in order and phasers were in them>

Dr. Brackman - New York City

Dr. Brackman had just finished having a conversation with a friend when his wristband started beeping.

"I hope we meet again soon," said Brackman to his friend, before he pressed a button and said, "QAI, what's our status?"

"Processors are operating at optimal capacity, slipstream connections stable, S.S. Black Sun is still located at previous landing position and is operating flawlessly, Project Chaos is still in progr-"

"Good, QAI, very good," said Brackman absentmindedly, "So do you have any requests to help with the project?"

"An increased number of processors would aid greatly," replied QAI, "I have concluded there are 13 more locations within known space where processors can be placed."

"Hmmm...well, QAI, relay those coordinates to Black Sun for me and I'll do my best to construct processors at those locations."

Brackman soon reached his shuttlecraft, the S.S. Black Sun, which sat in a clearing near a large park in the center of the city. Unlike most vessels, the S.S. Black Sun had no windows to speak of and no entrance could be seen. Brackman continued to walk into a building. As soon as the cooridor he was in was empty, he touched another button on his wristband and said, "Initiating recall in 5...4...3...2...1..." There was a sudden flash of light and Brackman vanished before reappearing inside the S.S. Black Sun.

Brackman sat down in the only seat in the cockpit and began pressing a series of buttons on the central console. The Black Sun began to move vertically and soon reached space.

A view screen popped up and a strange looking object in a red hexagon appeared. "Coordinates set. Heading to destination. ETA 9 hours."

"Very good, QAI," mumbled Brackman before he drifted off into sleep.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Faraness had been flooded with new reports everyday from her senior staff. Starbase 384, named Vernemeton Station, had only been completed not any longer than two weeks ago and it was a tough job to make sure everything was fully operational and running smoothly. There was still alot of internal construction being made. Deck 16 was being created for a new taskforce of marines and was not yet operational. The holodecks were also still not at one hundred percent completion. There were also still a lot of touch-ups that needed to be completed.

The Captain rose from the chair in her office of which she was still not used to, and walking into ops. She looked around at all the Starfleet officers and crewman alike, all of which were racing around like a nest of worker ants. She then glanced up and walked towards the huge window in ops. It were as if half of the ops itself was this contained by this window and boy was there a view.

Staring out into the stars, Faraness watched as transport ships and shuttlecraft buzzed around the station but it was not the ships her eyes were focused on. In the distance, beyond the busy station, was the most beautifull nebula she had ever set her eys on. It almost looked like the clouds back on Earth however this was not a bunch of clouds with the one apparent color in the sky. It looked almost like one single cloud, shaped like a belt that you would wear with your uniform. It stretched all the way around the new station, as far as the eye could see which made it seem almost endless. And the colors of the nebula were all different shades of colors. Although the inside looked almost a dark grey as if they were rainclouds, the edges of the cloud-like nubula, were shades of dark blue and green.

As if the nebula wasnt a spectacle in itself, there were twin suns that enhanced the beauty of the nebula. The nickname given to this natuers blessing was 'The Endless path to Heaven,' as the Nebula seemed endless.

After almost losing herself in the sheer bliss of what would be her daily view, Faraness snapped back into focus as a crewman walked infront of her path. She turned and looked towards a comms officer.

"ETA on our new flagship ensign?" She asked excitedly.

"The U.S.S Concordia is due to arrive in 18 hours sir." The ensign quickly replied after typing a few brief commands into his console.

"Very well. I'll be in my office." The captain stated as she walked towards her office.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Commander Ian Shepard - Shuttlecraft Tennyman, Earth Orbit

From the windows of the cramped Type 9 shuttlecraft, Shepard was finally able to catch a glimpse of Station McKinley. Freighters were buzzing in and out of the massive starbase, some of then headed only as far as Mars to supply the repairs to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, others were bound farther out. Shepard noticed more than a few heading through the new null-space catapult, or 'warp gate' as some cadets were calling it. Almost undoubtedly these were headed towards the Vernemeton gate, delivering final loads of supplies for construction and stocking.

"Starbase 001," the pilot said over the comm, startling Ian. "This is the shuttlecraft Tennyman, requesting permission to dock. We are carrying Commander Ian Shepard, bound for U.S.S. Concordia, NCC-79521."

"That was a bit formal, Lieutenant," Shepard said jovially. The pilot gave a half-hearted smile, not even taking her eyes from the console as the operator responded. "Confirmed, Tennyman. You are cleared to approach. Concordia has been alerted and is awaiting your arrival. McKinley Tower out."

The outer space doors were, conveniently, already open, and the small shuttlecraft took a wide turn into the massive entrance, steering clear of the many large freighters entering and exiting as well. The inside of the starbase was beyond words. It seemed to be a fathomable size until one realized that even at considerable thruster speed, the shuttle barely seemed to be moving. It took them almost fifteen minutes, given the traffic, to make their way around the large, dome-like interior of the starbase. Eventually, though, the body of an Intrepid-class starship began to reveal itself, and before long, Shepard could see the registry emblazoned across the hull, directly forward of the mess hall. Despite the fact that the Intrepid-class was one of Starfleet's smaller space frames, the words 'U.S.S. Concordia' were nearly as long as a football field.

The shuttle entered a landing pattern and lined up behind the ship, making a soft landing on the deck of the landing bay. The rear hatch slid open, and Shepard and his pilot walked out, and was immediately greeted by a few officers in dress uniform, one of whom blew a boatswain's whistle. "Captain on the deck!" the crewman announced, and it reminded Shepard that Starfleet protocol dictated that any vessel commander was to be addressed as "captain", regardless of actual rank. He found it to be an uptight protocol, and had vowed not to enforce it.

"At ease, Ensign," Shepard said. The three officers saluted, and began to escort the commander to the bridge. "I know you're just following protocol, everyone," the commander said, "but I do know how to find my way to the bridge. Relax before you sprain something, that's an order." One of the three smiled weakly, and they dispersed. It had been a while since Ian had been onboard an Intrepid-class ship, but it was a very orderly design, and it didn't take long before he found a turbolift. Stepping inside, the computer chimed, indicating it's readiness, and Shepard replied: "Deck one, main bridge."

After being expediently deposited at his destination, Shepard stepped out of the main turbolift, passing by the tactical station as the junior officer there recognized him. "Captain on the bridge!" the young crewman called out, and Shepard realized he would have to do this several times before the crew became acclimated to his presence. "At ease, everyone," he said, giving his crew a good look over. Several of the key officers were missing, notably his first officer, who was to be picked up when the Concordia laid over at Starbase Avalon on the way out to SB384.

Dr. Brackman - S.S. Black Sun, Near Jupiter Station, Sol System

Dr. Brackman had fallen into a deep sleep and did not notice when QAI made the shift from impulse to slipstream just as the shuttle passed Jupiter Station. The shuttle accelerated to speeds unseen in the Federation toward QAI's designated coordinates. In several hours time, the shuttle would have crossed the threshold between the Alpha and Delta Quadrants and a few more hours would lead the shuttle deep into the Delta Quadrant. Even at Brackman's advanced age, he still has much work to do and needed QAI's processing power to help him, which is why he travels so far from the Alpha Quadrant. Even his shuttle relied on QAI's aid - the shuttle would be unable to travel in a quantum slipstream if it wasn't for QAI's rapid adjustments and calculations to maintain the slipstream.

The shuttle continued undisturbed on its course to the Delta Quadrant, with Brackman still slumbering. A console near Brackman indicated that the ETA had changed to 8.25 hours.

**Cmdr Reid sat on a bench on the promenade as she pondered her point in life. She was slightly nervous about her new command level posting on the Concordia however she was certain that Commander Shepard would not have asked her to be his xo unless he was certain that she would execute her function well. Her going away party from the USS Cumberland had just dispersed. She had a lot of fond memories with the crew. She had been posted their for the last year exploring the frontier of the beta quadrant. Admiral Will Karelia - Central Park, New York City, Earth

"I like that idea." Will and Julia kept walking through the park, talking softly as they went. Due to the size of the park, they only passed by a few others the entire time. Eventually, the time came, and Will had to interrupt their serene walk. "I have to meet Janeway at Starfleet HQ. I'll meet you on the Virtue when we get ready to leave." He gave Julia a kiss goodbye, smiled, and started toward the nearest transport depot.

Thankfully, the nearest depot was only just outside the park, and Will was therein a couple minutes. He smiled at the civilian operator as he stepped onto the pad. "Where to, Admiral?" came the operator's query, to which Will replied: "Starfleet Headquarters." The operator ran his hands over the controls, and Karelia felt the familiar tingle of molecular disintegration. His view slowly faded from the lush park to that of the interior of the transporter room at Starfleet Headquarters, Building 01. "Welcome, Admiral Karelia," this transporter operator said. "Admiral Janeway is in her office waiting for you, sir." Karelia stepped off of the transporter pad, tugged his uniform straight, and thanked the operator, before heading for the turbolift.

The door to Janeway's office slid open, and Karelia stepped inside. Janeway closed a report on the large monitor, and spun her chair to see Karelia. "Will!" she said with a smile, "it's been too long."

"That little jaunt you took in the Delta Quadrant didn't help things, you know," he said back, teasing. She gave a look of agreement. "So, what can I do for you, Kathryn?"

"Owen has asked me to accompany you to the new deep-space outpost for the first few weeks. He says that my knowledge of the area will be 'invaluable in helping the expedition get off to the best start possible'. At first, I wasn't sure, but I think it will bring back some good memories. Anyway, I thought it might be a good idea to go over some of our old databases regarding some of the locals in the area, points of interest, and all that. After all, that's my old ball-park."

They talked for about twenty minutes, before finally finishing up with the basic run-down. Janeway stood up, obviously sick of slumping over a monitor. "I'll transmit the full records to you in the first datastream, Will."

"Thanks," he said. "I'm sure we'll have our hands full with setting up until then." Will smiled at his fellow admiral, and left the office. He made for the nearest turbolift, bound for the Starfleet Command private hangar bay, where the newly-restored Cardinal Virtue sat, her brand new paint job never having yet left the planet.

Commander Ian Shepard - Bridge, U.S.S. Concordia

"Thank you, lieutenant," Shepard said as Urban handed him a padd with the final pre-launch tactical reports.

Ian took a seat for the first time in the command chair, something he'd done before only as the captain of a small Starfleet freighter. This was a fully-stocked Federation starship, resulting in a fair bit more grandiose of an experience. Several of the bridge officers watched with anticipation as the new captain tried the seat on for size, averting their eyes when Shepard looked back. "Well," he said, "I think it's high time we got underway. After all, my crew's not complete yet."

Shepard tapped his commbadge. "All hands, this is the captain. Report to your station and prepare to depart. We'll be soon entering the Sol catapult and laying over at Avalon Station, to pick up our first officer and a shipment of supplies. From there, we'll be entering another catapult, arriving shortly thereafter at Vernemeton Station, a full forty thousand light-years form Earth. I've looked over the personnel files of every officer that will be stationed aboard this ship, and I'd like you all to know that I truly believe that this is the most resourceful crew in Starfleet. I look forward to many years on this ship, with each and every one of you."

Ian paused a moment, and cut the intercom. He then turned to the lieutenant at tactical. "Mr. Urban, would you please take the conn?"

Urban ran his hands over the console, obviously as excited as Ian to be piloting the ship out of dock for it's first time. Shepard tapped a button on his command console. "McKinley Station, this is the U.S.S. Concordia, requesting clearance for departure." The Starfleet operator was silent for a moment. "Concordia, you are cleared for departure. Good luck out there. McKinley out."

Shepard took one more look around the bridge, and sat back, taking in the feel of the comfortable fabric. "Begin disengagement sequence. Once we're clear, set a course for the Sol catapult and hold position near it."

Dr. Brackman - S.S. Black Sun, Quantum Slipstream en route to Delta Quadrant

Dr. Brackman woke up from his nap after a good three hours. The ETA had readjusted to 6 hours, due to some unusual stellar phenomena that had to be avoided or so QAI believed. Brackman yawned before pondering on the projects he had yet to complete. His most recent project at the moment was to create improved replicators that could project their replicated matter some distance away and so could reduce construction times for many projects to a fraction of their original times, with the same results. However, Brackman still had yet to complete the cybernetic implants that were designed to extend his life considerably. Brackman had thousands of ideas and even a millenia would not be enough to bring even a fraction of them to frutation. He hoped to glean some information from Delta Quadrant species to help him, as many of them had technologies that exceeded the Federation's by an untold factor.

"Status, QAI?" inquired Brackman, curious to know what had happened during his nap.

"Molecules stable, systems operating at maximum efficiency, slipstream stable, expected to arrive at destination in 5 hours, 53 minutes, 26 seconds," replied QAI in its usual harsh tone.

"Do you have more information on our destination?"

"Destination is designated a class-M planet, but the surface is roughly 80% desert, with the remaining 20% being water. The planet yields very few usable resources. The atmosphere is breathable and the gravity within your tolerance. There are no known sentient lifeforms present."

"How unfortunate...it would be useful to have a small outpost in the Delta Quadrant."

"There is boronite ore on the planet."

"Well, now an outpost is of strategic importance! Oh yes. Your choices are very smart, QAI, very smart. Now, I'll need to construct an automated mine and refinery. Looks like we'll finally be able to test out the prototype, QAI."

"The mine and refinery are already replicated, in a compressed format. The only remaining priorities are to decompress the structures and to link one of my processors to them, both of which are automated processes."

"What would they be powered by?"

"The boronite ore is located near a geothermal vent. Along with solar chips, they would receive power from the vent."

"Good, good..." Brackman mumbled before slipping into another nap, now with the ETA reading 5 hours, 30 minutes.

Admiral Will Karelia - Starfleet Headquarters, Command Hangar

Will entered the cavernous hangar, which was populated with nearly a dozen assorted ships, ranging from shuttlecraft to runabouts, all the way up to the Cardinal Virtue. He made his way to the rear of the white, alien vessel, and slid open a small compartment, containing a keypad. Karelia entered in a short keycode, and the rear hatch began to drop.

Walking up the ramp to the interior of the ship, Will had to admire the care taken in it's restoration. He had asked the Gallifreyan engineers to retain the foreign architecture of the small starship, rather than use more standard Federation styles. He checked each compartment as if taking a tour for the first time. Firstly, the engine room and cargo bay, both immediately forward of the ramp. Then, he checked the crew lounge and bunkroom, both also in pristine condition. Finally he came to the cockpit at the end of the spinal corridor. The door slid away to reveal the room perfectly restored, so much so that Will would never notice that the ship had crashed if he had not been there to experience it.

It was then that the copilot's chair spun around, with Julia sitting in it, holding a padd and a mug of Klingon coffee. "Well, I see you beat me here," he teased, giving her a kiss as he moved past to sit in the helm seat. "Time to head off, I guess. I won't lie, I'm a bit anxious to see our new home-away-from-home."

Will slid into the pilot's chair and the controls sprung to life. He carefully raised the output of the thorium reactors, diverted power to the impulse boosters, and gently lifted the ship from the hangar floor. It pivoted around in place - nearly silent in it's grace - to face the door, and passed through the security forcefield with ease. The Virtue was now airborne for the first time since her crash on Gallifrey.

Karelia punched in autopilot coordinates, ones that took the ship toward the Sol catapult, and turned his chair around. "Between this jump and the one from Avalon to Vernemeton, we're looking at a few hours until we arrive. Care to have dinner with me one last time before we leave the Alpha Quadrant?"

Commander Ian Shepard - Bridge, U.S.S. Concordia

Commander Shepard looked into the empty aperture of the catapult as a small light began beeping on his command panel. Catapult Control had given them clearance to enter null-space. "Helm," he said, "begin launch procedures."

The five emitters on each arm of the gate locked onto the Concordia with what looked like tractor beams, and the aperture began to look similar to a wormhole. The emitters charged, and when they fired, the beams slung the Concordia at breakneck speeds through the gate.

"We're inside null-space, commander," the junior operations officer said. "Our ETA to Starbase Avalon is approximately two hours." Ian smiled. "So far, so good."

Shepard chuckled at the tactical officer's boldness. "I'm sure you'll get to know me soon enough, lieutenant. After all, I'm not always on duty."

The commander opened a set of specification files on the Concordia. The ship was impressive; fast, agile, and armed heavily enough to outlast most of the known aggressors in the Delta Quadrant. It had sensor suites worthy of a Galaxy-class ship, and enough luxuries to make an outstanding diplomatic vessel. He took a moment to admire the ship's outline, captivated by the beauty of the Intrepid-class design.

Faraness was tapping on a number of different padds reading reports of different sections of the Station, when a coom came in from ops.

"Captain, we just recieved confirmation that the U.S.S Concordia has entered null space via the Sol warpgate. They shall arrive at Station Avalon within the hour."

"Warp gate huh? Oh the catapult. Very well, contact all senior staff to make their way to the promenade. I think its time to do a bit of exploring to get to kow the station a bit better before our new guests arrive."

"Yes mam."

With that, the comm ended and the new Station Captain exited her office and made her way through ops to a turbolift, nodding towards the comms officer she had just spoken to and also taking yet another look at the view. She entered the turbolift and intructed its destination to the promenade.

A turbolift door opened just outside the entrance to the promenade. Faraness took a step out and walked through the entrance to the promenade. There were people rushing around everywhere. Mainly maintenance crew and Starfleet Officers alike all working on moving in supplies and doing the finishing touch-ups around the place. There were also a few civilians setting up their new shops in the area. Although the promenade looked like a military base at the time, Faraness knew once it had been completed and the shops and resturaunts had all opened up, that the place would start to buzz.

She took a few extra steps in as if to be noticed and looked around for signs of her new senior staff.

There really wasn't much more to do but periodically check on everything and research the warp gate.

"Well, Grew up on a farm out in Oregon. Where I met my wife Sarah. She accompanied me on my assignments where I could take her. On one of our ventures we ran into a child who was wrought with poverty, both of her parents dead, so my wife and I decided to take her in, so I brought both of them with me onboard. Been in starfleet ever sense protecting people. Every now and then I have to use my weapon but I rather not. Im good at Martial arts. Learned self defense in the academy and learned offense from Klingons and Vulcans. When I tried with the Vulcans, they didnt wish to train me in their martial arts but my wife talked them into it. She can be quite mean when she wants to be. Then when I was posted near a Klingon outpost for several months, I learned how to use a Bat'lith and several other weapons which I cant pronounce. But yeah, as I said. I have learned quite a few things. But when it comes to my family, they will take priority over duty. No offense, Captain." Urban said to Naquv.

"Ah, interesting. That is very noble of you to take in that child. If you want to sir, I would find it enjoyable to meet you on the holodeck at a later time, to match our Bat'leth skills?

Naquv was not entirely comfortable inviting a superior to recreate with him, for two reasons.
For one, he was very introvertive, he didn't do things with other people often. Two, on the bridge of a Klingon ship, communication with other officers, especially superiors, was kept to a minimum.

But Naquv was often told to be more outgoing, even by some Klingons he respected.

Dr. Brackman - Desert Planet, Delta Quadrant

Dr. Brackman woke up as the S.S. Black Sun dropped out of Quantum Slipstream, in orbit around a desert planet. "Status, QAI?" asked Brackman.

"Arrival at destination. Entering atmosphere now."

The shuttle descended into the planet's atmosphere, its shields protecting it from the rapid descent. Several minutes later, the shuttle hovered a couple of meters above a stretch of land bordering one of the planet's seas. There was a large hole nearby with copious amounts of steam rising from it.

"Deploying structures," announced QAI as two massive metallic blocks of metal dropped out of the shuttle's underbelly, landing quietly on the sand. A moment later, the blocks began to expand. One grew large enough to cover the geothermal vent and the last of the steam disappated. The other structure soon attached to the mine and sat there, waiting for the ore to arrive.

"Deploying processors," continued QAI as another box shaped object, this time much smaller, landed next to the complex and attached itself to it. Brackman heard the mine's drill roar to life before beginning to dig.

"Deploying stealth shields," said QAI as a device roughly the size of a helm console on most Federation ships fell and landed with a resounding clank on top of the now shuttle sized complex.

"Activating shields," reported QAI as the complex shimmered out of sight, now hidden from view and most sensors.

"Objective complete. Heading to next destination," stated QAI, with the shuttle now ascending from the planet, leaving the complex behind. The shuttle soon had soon reentered orbit. A minute after that, the shuttle entered slipstream once again.

Alex David prowled through out the ward meeting the many new faces under his watchful eye. The was Alex's first time manning a starship his last postings and been on star bases. He approached a crewman who was taking an inventory of the ships medical supplies.

"So what supplies have we got Mr..." Alex asked gruffly.

"Rush, Xavier Rush sir." The Crewman responded finishing Alex's sentence. "We are pretty full up, we just need our stocks of Morphine and Insulin. We should get those when we stop by the Avalon Station"

Rush then signed off the PADD and handed it to Alex.

"Thank you Rush" he said taking hold of the PADD and reading it as he made his way to the bridge.

Alex approached Ian Shepard who was sitting in the Command chair.

"My medical supplies are almost complete sir, we are just waiting on Morphine and Insulin." Alex said handing the PADD over to Shepard. "Hopefully you won't need our services any time soon though" Alex continued throughing a dark look over at Urban who was sitting at the Tactical station.

"I certainly would hope not, doctor. I'll make sure to put in a request for your missing supplies when we get to Starbase Avalon."

Over the next two hours, the bridge crew conversed causally whilst performing their (at the the moment, very lax) duties. Finally, the null-space field enveloping the Concordia was negated as it approached the Avalon catapult, and the ship dropped to sublight speeds as it passed through the arms. "Ensign," the commander called, turning to the operations station, "hail Starbase Avalon and inform them that we've arrived. We're ready to take on both additional supplies, as well as our new first officer."

Dr. Brackman - Quantum Slipstream, en route to an unknown destination in the Delta Quadrant

Brackman was about to nod off the sleep again when suddenly the shuttle shook.

"Status, QAI?" inquired Brackman, worried something might have damaged the shuttle.

"Error has occurred. Dropping out of slipstream. Attempting to determine error," replied QAI, its display showing it working furiously. Brackman took a look at the sensors and saw that the shuttle was stranded in an asteriod field at an unknown location.

"Error determined. Prototype replicators have caused a cascade failure throughout multiple systems, including the slipstream drive, replicators, and life support. Failure was delayed by automatic countermeasures. Life support will continue to operate for 5 hours with remaining power. Stablizer chamber, weapons systems, shields, and maneuvering thrusters unaffected. However, the Black Sun is unable to resume normal operations under current conditions."

"So it seems we have a problem, QAI. Could you determine our present coordinates? I could then search for a nearby station or planet to repair the shuttle."

"Recommended action is to set course for Vernemeton Station using escape pod. The station is controlled by the Federation and aid will probably be found there. Unsuccessful in determining present coordinates. More information is required. Station is an unknown distance from current location. Shuttle will operate in standby mode until repairs can by administered. Back up programs have been uploaded to escape pod to upload into either another star ship or space station in order to determine present coordinates."

"Well then, see you in a while, QAI," replied Brackman before he headed to the back and entered the escape pod. A few minutes later, the escape pod was jettisoned from the underbelly of the shuttle, narrowly missed an asteroid before setting course in the direction of Vernemeton Station.

Vernemeton Station - Promenade; Roughly 1 Standard Hour ago

Saul had been wandering around the station for about thirty minutes, enjoying the various views of the nebula outside and the workbees zipping and zooming around - a fair-sized cluster of them flying around Deck 16, which he had heard would be the home of the Marine contingent. This is what he needed - a hub of activity! He also enjoyed the business of the personnel running around the station, trying to get it operational, ensure that all the systems were working, and the general tasks which go with setting up a new starbase. There were even a few civilians here already, trying to get their shops set up before everyone else. Saul chuckled when he learned that the first civilian to arrive and start setting up shop was a Ferengi - typical.

He had finally managed to wander his way to the promenade, when he saw two men - it looked like father and son - struggling with some supplies. It seemed that most of their stuff was in large, industrial crates, which were a common site in any ships cargo hold, as they were relatively cheap and could be configured to hold almost anything - he had even heard of pirates smuggling people in them before. The young man couldn't have been much older than 16, and it seemed he hadn't yet reached his full height, and he was struggling trying to reach a container at the top of a pile, and it was tottering dangerously. As the container started to fall, Saul sprinted the few steps towards the boy and caught the container, saving the boy from a nasty injury underneath it.

"Thanks, Sir." the young man mumbled. He didn't take a second look at the Lieutenant Commander's nose ridges - which was an attitude that he had become familiar with in the all-accepting Federation since he joined, and was one of the reasons he enjoyed it so much.

"Thank you ever so much, Commander." the boys father - or so Saul presumed - was a balding man, with what remnants of hair he had long gone grey. "It's just the two of us since the boy's mother passed away, and we don't know a thing about all this organisational stuff - she was always the one who did that."

"Well, perhaps I can lend a hand?" Saul smiled, taking the PADD off the man, and looking through the contents.

-----------------
==1 Hour Later==
-----------------

"And this lot." Saul paused as he and John lifted the last crate up onto the desk. Opening it, he took out one of the items inside - a beautiful, ornamental gem stone the size of his fist. "Can go in here." opening the glass cabinet they had recently erected in the new shop, he placed it carefully inside.

"Thank you so much, Saul." Paul said, smiling, as he and his son began moving the contents into the cabinet. "I don't know what we could have done without you."

"No problem, Paul." The Commander smiled. "I couldn't just walk away and leave you to drop things on your son's head, could I?" he joked, ruffling the boy's hair.

Looking up, he happened to catch sight of the Captain, stepping out onto the Promenade, and being greeted by a fellow Lieutenant Commander. "If you two will excuse me, I have a boss to suck up to now." he winked.

Stepping out of the shop, he strode confidently over to the new CO. "Good morning Captain! Come to admire the good work all these people are doing?" he said, smiling.

Upon arrival on deck six, the commander left the turbolift and rounded the corner, finding the entrance to the transporter room about twenty meters down the corridor. Vernemeton Station - Arrival

*Jack Ryan was standing in front of a turbolift and as it opened, he and a group of civilians stepped inside. Jack had just arrived at Vernemeton Station on a commercial transport. This was his second placement after graduating from the academy, but in between he had been travelling around several sectors. His journey ended at station Avalon, where he contacted Starfleet and got the assignment to travel to this new starbase. He was excited to meet his new comrades and to see what this part of space contains. As he was the last one to enter the turbolift, he followed the rest to the promenade.

Andrew walked up to the captain, he had heard good things about her and her file made for a good read. She looked pleasant enough as well, however he wasn't sure what she was like. Medical files and comments from the Admiral that signed off on his transfer orders didn't really give him an impression of her character.
"Hey Captain," he said in a cheery tone, "nice to finally meet you. Do you have any cool nick name I should call you by? Do people call you cap for instance? You know, like Captain America. Is it just Rangwere or Captain. Or is it, you know, Captain but said in a cool and almost mystified and awestruck way, you know. Captain. Or, do you rock the french 'mon cápitan' as your moniker."

He chuckles to himself and decides to mess around with some of the newbies. He turns sharply on his heel and takes on the temperment of an old earth Marine drill sergent and stalks towards Greenwood.

He shouts, "You will address your commanding officer as sir or m'am, do you hear me!? You do not disrespect them, they are above you; you are a worthless maggot. You *will* say yes m'am or no m'am and do what you are told, do you hear me!?"

He turns his head slightly towards Captain Rangwere so his face is away from Greenwood and gives a lop sided grin. He snaps his head back to face Greenwood.

"What are you staring at, I asked you a question!"

Dr. Brackman - En route to Vernemeton Station

Dr. Brackman closely monitored his escape pod's route, recording every sensor log so he could trace his way back, though there was nothing interesting to note on the journey. Unfortunately, the escape pod was not equipped with any form of warp drive, though Brackman at least had the foresight to have impulse engines installed so it wouldn't have to rely on only maneuvering thrusters for movement. At the moment, the pod was heading toward the station at full impulse, though it was already several hours into the journey.

Brackman was momentarily surprised at the sensors' sudden beeping and noticed that the station was detected. Brackman determined that he would arrive at the station within the hour and began to formulate his request to the commander of the station.

Faraness almost jumped when her XO turned and started yelling at the new Chief Medical Officer. She didn't expect a burst like that at all but when Aiden looked over and gave a cheekish grin, she knew he was just having a bit of fun.

"Now now, I didn't know the marines were here already?" She said while looking towards Mr Byrne. "Are you sure its safe to be yelling at your doctor X?" (off: X as in XO )

Faraness then turned and looked at the officer in blue. "Welcome onboard Mr Greenwood, you must excuse the X he nearly got his hands dirty and he could be a bit grumpy about it still." Faraness said with a bit of a chuckle. Her tone of voice putting out as if the comment was a friendly joke at the XO's expense. Although she hoped that he did not take offence. The captain then replied to the doctors first question.

"And no Mr Greenwood I do not have a 'nickname' as such but captain or sir will do fine. Although im sure if i need to see you for a checkup, the formalities can be left at the entrance to your office." She finished her sentence with a smile.

In the background, Faraness noticed another officer in yellow, who, in a way looked lost as he was walking around the promenade. At a better glimpse, Faraness recognised him as the stations new Ops chief. Although she had not met her senior staff yet, she had studied all their backgrounds and memorized what they looked like for this very reason.

She speaks up to the now small group of officers surrounding her. "Well it looks like our new operations chief has just arrived. X would you like to call him over for me please?"

Killing time was it?

He shook his head and looked around before spotting a gathering of starfleet officers. He walked up and cleared his throat politely, and waited to then be acknowledged. He planned to ask them when the Concordia would arrive, which would give him a good indication of how much he could see of the station.

On his shoulder looking around like some Egyptian cat god, Cochrane stared at the people around him in an aloof manner that only a Feline could do.

"Where was I again?" Victor asked the group of people sitting in front of him.
"Spontaneous combustion Sir" one of them answered, Victor recognized him as Gregory Nesmith. "But you will have to finish that subject another time, I am here to notify you there is a transmission for you."
For me? I haven't had a transmission at the ten year I've been working here. Victor thought to himself.
Victor left the classroom and went to the closest place he could get the message.

<USS Alexandrus arrived at coordinates, passengers who have not yet left the ship have thirty minutes left to do so.>

[Victor E. Fleech, USS Alexandrus]

Victor awakened suddenly, how long had they been at Avalon already? Well, he need not worry, the comm message said he still had thirty minutes. He picked up his rucksack from under his chair, stood up and went to look for the closest docking port. For he remembered an officer telling him they would be docking with Vernemeton. None of the starfleet personnel that would come along to Vernemeton was still around. Nice, first starship I travel on and I already do not know where to get of.

The first person he came across he asked where he had to go:"Kadet, where is the closest docking port where I may enter Vernemeton?"
"Cadet?" the man answered "I am an ensign, but why do you need a docking port, the ship hasn't docked with the station. You will be beamed over."
"We are going by transporter? Sure, where's the closest room?" Victor answered.
"I'll take you there Sir, it's not far." The man said while he started walking.

In the transporter room the officer in charge asked Victor's name.
"Victor Fleech" he answered.
"Fleech" the officer muttered "Ah, here, Victor E. Fleech, you're late, hurry up and get on the pad."

[Victor E. Fleech, Vernemeton station]

Victor had not even set foot on the station or he heard a comm message directed at, amongst others, him.

<Would members of the senior staff please make way a.s.a.p. to the promenade, thank you>

While not even given the time to change out of his standard clothes he asked directions to the promenade and made his way there.

As Faraness was looking at her XO, X as she like to call her second in commands, she noticed another officer heading towards the group. This one however she did not recognise as one of her senior staff. He was also bearing what looked to be an earth pet called a cat on his shoulders. He came to a halt at the group of officers expecting to be greeted.

"Can i help you there at all Lt?" She asked after looking at his pips and calling his respectfull rank.

As she asked the question, she noticed the ops chief had spotted the group and was heading towards them at a casual pace.

"Goodafternoon I'm Jack Ryan, the new Chief of Operations on this station," were the first words he spoke to the group with. Faraness was a bit stunned to see a low ranking officer talk so casually, she actually thought she found someone that spoke as casually as she once did as a younger officer. But she then realised he did not know who he was talking to until the group faced him and he noticed the rank pips. The man quickly corrected his position and spoke again.

"Sorry Ma'am, Jack Ryan reporting for duties!" The words came out of his mouth in what Faraness thought to be an overly excessive amount of respect to compensate for his casual greeting.

"At ease Mr Ryan. We are not at war here, how come everyone is so formal." She said with a look as if to say not another one.

"Since the most of you are here now let me set this out now. When we greet i dont want to see you standing straight and being so dan formal. Call me captain but theres no need for my senior staff to be saluting me every second i bump into them on the station. Unless its something serious ofcourse or if theres an Admiral standing beside me." She said her last words with a smile as if to relax her staff more.

"Things are so different when your taken out of your comfort zone and your posted on a new station in the middle of nowhere. Noone knows you. There are new faces everywhere. You have to lea......." Faraness's sentence was interupted by a pulling sensation on her leg followed by a somewhat mechanical bark sounding much like a dog.

"What the hell is that?" She said taking a step back almost reaching for her phaser.

Brackman's escape pod soon entered hailing range of the station, though Brackman himself didn't noticed until several minutes later, as he was carefully going over the sensor logs. He hailed the station after storing the information.

"This is Dr. Brackman to Vernemeton Station. I would like to speak with the commander of the station as soon as possible after I am docked. Where is he located?"

A baffled Starfleet officer appeared on the viewscreen, looking utterly confused at Brackman's request.

"Dr. Brackman, it seems you don't have clearance to be in this area. Could you please go through the null space catapult and -"

Brackman cut him off angrily, "If you haven't noticed, officer, I'm in an escape pod. Clearance is the last thing on my mind. I would like to discuss the situation with the commander of the station, the sooner the better. Now, as soon as I've landed, I expect someone to direct me to the commander with all promptness. Brackman did not wait for a response before terminating the transmission. The escape pod quickly manuevered toward one of the station's hanger bays before landing. Brackman composed himself, preparing for a long fight, before leaving the escape pod. Another Starfleet officer awaited Brackman nervously.

"Captain Rangwere is located at the Hub's promenade. If you would just follow me," the officer said, wilting under Brackman's severe glare before quickly walking toward the hanger bay doors. Brackman followed after briskly. Soon they arrived at the entrance to the promenade, where Brackman noticed a small gathering of Starfleet officers and a mechanical dog.

"I'll take it from here, officer. You're dismissed," said Brackman. The officer hesitated momentarily before heading off in another direction. Brackman moved toward the group quickly, knowing there was little time to waste.

After he ended transmission, he conducted scans on the nebula.
There were some crystal fragments and asteroid fragments within the nebula, but crystal was not often found in space, much less a nebula. The optical sensors noted there were flashes coming from the nebula. He checked his sensors again, tapping on his console, both arms working at the same time. He found that the asteroids and crystals had no pattern of orbit, so they would occasionaly crash together, which he found would emit the flashes.

"Most curious, sir. the flashes emmitting from the nebula are Triboluminescent. There are some simple crystals in the nebula that rub against some asteroid fragments to create light."

Dr. Brackman joined the gathering of Starfleet officers. He immediately stood out as the oldest person in the group, with gray hair and many wrinkles. However, that did not stop him from quickly singling out Captain Rangwere, who was the highest ranking officer in the group and had the look of experience about him.

"Captain Rangwere, I presume," said Brackman as he caught the captain's attention, "I must speak with you at once. I am Dr. Gustaf Brackman. My research shuttle was badly damaged after an experiment and I was forced to abandon it several lightyears from here, in an asteroid field. The research and experiments on board would be extremely dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands. At the very least, another shuttle will be required to replace critical components of the shuttle and a computer core to calculate the shuttle's exact coordinates. The recovery of my shuttle is of utmost importance and of highest priority. What can you do for me?" Brackman stared almost threateningly at Rangwere, waiting for a response.

Lt. Dwight smiled as he walked over quickly and tapped the dog on the head. "Release, now." He while saying that, held onto the shoulder of the pickpocketer with a firm grip. "We will now wait for the security of this station to come..." He looked down at the Canine robot. "Good boy, I can see this station will be blessed to have you on board." He smiled as the same waiter from before walked out with a smile.

"I believe you forgot this sir, have a nice day sir." he said, making sure that he didn't focus on the scene of the stopping of the thief.

Dwight smiled as quickly put the bag on his shoulder. "Now... we can play some fetch in the holodeck till my ship..."

The computer voice sounded. "Star Ship Concordia has docked with the station, all personnel on assignment for Concordia, please head towards transporter room five as soon as possible."

Dwight looked saddened. He still keep talking to the canine. "I am sorry boy, but my duty calls, I am that ships chief Engineer."

A voice sounded over the comm. =A=Uh sir... this is your chief of Engineering, I just came aboard, I came a little too soon, so I will have you that report in under the next two hours... Dwight out.=A=

Meanwhile Dwight was heading down the hallway towards engineering, while Cochrane was still on his shoulder. He quickly moved into the engineering of the ship before moving to his office, and locked the feline in, he right away moved to one of the screens and began to call up the data.

"Excuse me sir," an Ensign said as he walked over to him. "But what are you doing? Do you have clearance?" he looked like he was about to tap his comm badge.

Dwight looked and turned his head to the young man. "Is that anyway to talk to your chief Engineer? I should be registered on the computer, Fredrick Dwight, Lt." He said, his voice showing a no nonsense attitude was what he expected. "Is that understood Ensign?"

The young man only gulped but saluted. "Yes sir... Anything I can do sir?"

Dwight only smiled. "I want a report of what the engines looked like during the null gravity catapult, I would like to see how to make the engines more efficent next time we go through it."

"Right away sir." The ensign said.

Dwight smiled, he knew he would not have the luxury of doing this during a crisis, but it felt good to finally be in a place that he understood... let some of the more less grounded thinkers be the ones creative, as long as they didn't mess too much with his engines, he would be fine... which reminded him, he should test in the holodeck the actual limits of this core... he would like to put it through a few non traditional shakedown tests there... always good to know how the heart of the ship would react in certain situations.

She then turned towards Mr Brackman who had butted into the group conversation and quite rudely demanded for parts for his ship.

"Mr Brackman was it?" She put on a very serious voice especially infront of what now was her whole senior staff.

"For starters, NOONE threatens me and comes on my station demanding parts from one of our shuttles to fix a ship I know nothing about. Secondly what makes you think your tone of voice is going to get you anywhere here? And theres no way we are just going to give you the parts to go off and fix it yourself. I suggest you go have a think about the way you just went about that and possibly come back later in a better mood. THEN I may be able to see how Starfleet can help you." She stood firm instead of her recent casual stance infront of her crew. She was staring right at the civilian scientist as to show that there was nothing he could say to change her mind.

Before Brackman had a chance to respond, the captains commbadge went off as an incoming comm was being transmitted.

"This is the captain." She said while tapping her commbadge, slowing the tone of her voice back to a professional level.

The voice of an ensign from ops could be heard on the otherside, "The U.S.S Concordia has just arrived and been cleared to dock in bay 2. Admiral Karelia's ship has also just exited the warpga.. uh Null Space Catapult sir and are about to dock in bay 7.." he sounded nervous as he quickly corrected himself. Fresh from the academy the ensign felt very nervous about his first post.

"Very well ensign. Rangwere out."

She turned to her senior staff. "Although it would have been good to stride through the promenade with you all, it seems our new flagship and the members of Starfleet Command have just arrived. Time to get to work everyone. X I want you to take the senior staff to welcome the new crew of the Concordia. Mr Greenwood, Mr Andrews, your with me. Time to do some sucking up to the Admirals. I want everything formal here gentlemen, lets give them a warm welcome." She turned almost ignoring Mr. Brackman but giving him a look over, and walked towards the turbolift, with the two officers behind her. The turbolift doors opened and they walked in.

"Docking bay 7" were the words that came out of the captains mouth before the turbo lift doors closed and began to move towards its destination.

Vernemeton Station - Docking Bay 7

Brackman arrived at Docking Bay 7 and saw Rangwere with two other officers heading toward the Admirals. He assessed the situation, trying to determine his next action. The situation was dire enough that he seriously considered just stealing a shuttle, but, after weighting the consequences, decided to just wait and see what Rangwere and the two Admirals did before doing anything himself. Sooner or later, however, he had to get their attention and hopefully their permission, but he could certainly do without. As he waited, he consulted QAI on his wrist device.

"Status, QAI?" asked Brackman, after he turned away from the group.

"More systems have failed, Dr. Brackman. Excess hull plating has been disposed of, along with the slipstream drive. Materials were destroyed according to protocol. Stablizing chamber is now running off stored power. Failure expected in 12 hours," QAI replied.

"Begin irradiating of the molecules now," ordered Brackman, "Conserve any power the shuttle has after that."

Suddenly, the device began a loud beeping noise that didn't stop. "Unidentified vessel has altered trajectory and is now approaching the shuttle. Signature indicate the vessel is most likely Borg. Estimated arrival time: 5 hours. Projections indicate that the shuttle will not be able to defend itself sufficently in its current condition."

Brackman turned off the noise, but it had already attracted much unwanted attention, though it didn't really matter anymore since he knew time had just run out.

"Destroy the molecules at any cost, QAI, and prepare to combat the vessel. Destroy the shuttle immediately if there is any indication that the approaching vessel is attempting to capture the shuttle."

Brackman turned around, prepared to do anything it took to retrieve his shuttle.

Dr. Brackman? Victor was still wondering if the man who had stood besides them was really him. He was an outcast, other scientists called him a loony who wanted the impossible. But why would the guy show up here? On the other side of the universe? Victor looked, how long had he been standing here daydreaming since the captain's move out message? He took a quick look around to see what had already been set up, a couple of simple stalls and a bar. He walked towards the bar and asked the barkeep a black coffee in a disposable mug. Asking where the beans came from, he got a short reply: replicate coffee.

Victor E. Fleech, Starbase Vernemeton, Corridors>

Victor left the promenade and started walking towards his quarters, or atleast, started to walk away from the promenade. Givong up on finding his way himself very quickly, he asked the computer the way to his assigned quarters. The route he got from the computer sounded rather complicated, but with a little trial and error he found his way. He just considered himself having taken a tourist route. When he reached his quarters he was greeted by the characteristic beeping of an opening door.

<Victor E. Fleech, Starbase Vernemeton, Fleech's Quarters>

The quarters were as empty and silent as one would expect from a starfleet quarter, but atleast his stuff were already there. Probably beamed over right when we landed here. He opened one of the boxes and was glad to learn it was his own stuff. Opening a second box he found his uniform and took it out. Changing his black jeans and purple blouse for his green striped uniform, he started to wonder if he was forgetting something? His pips! He took out the gold and black buttons and put them on his collar. Combadge? he thought, but then remembered they were told they would be given those on their new duty. He left the quarter and started making his way towards the bridge, atleast, if he could find it.

Dr. Brackman - Docking Bay 7

Dr. Brackman decided that there was no time to waste and approached the admirals just after they arrived. Walking up next to Rangwere, he cut her off before she could get off so much as a "hello".

"Admirals, we have a situation. My research shuttle has been stranded in an asteroid field some distance from this station. It has been critically damaged and a number of systems have failed or have begun to fail. At the very least another shuttle is needed to arrive at my shuttle's location and to salvage for components to repair it. Furthermore, a computer core is required to download certain programs in order to pin-point my shuttle's location," reported Brackman rapidly.

Seeing that Rangwere was about to cut him off, he turned to her and said, "While I have already told this to you, Captain, I have just been informed of a new development. An unidentifed vessel, possibly Borg, has altered trajectory and is now approaching my shuttle."

After letting that sink in for a moment, he turned back to the Admirals and continued, "My shuttle contains my personal research, experimental technologies, and information on everything in the known universe. Additionally, there is a sentient AI that would put the Borg to shame. If the unidenfied vessel, which is due to arrive at my shuttle's location in less than 5 hours, manages to steal even a fraction of information from my shuttle and they have hostile intentions, well, let's just say reliving the Dominion War or Wolf 359 would look like a wonderful option and I don't say that lightly. There is no time to think or argue about this, action is required now."

Naquv started running tests and diagnostics from his console. He had a feeling when Miss Reid said general she meant something more than general, considering she allotted 5 hours. Of course everything was running good so far. He found that life support was running okay, but it was a bit warm for him personally.

Most Klingons like the warm, but he preferred 19 degrees Celsius, 'room temperature' for humans.

Even though he ran his own diagnostics and later reviews, he ordered a few of his on-duty officers to run some themselves.

"Run your own diagnostics of our systems, if you have any questions or problems, please report them to me. Report back in three hours. That is all." he said to his officers during a small meeting.

Faraness was not one to tolerate being interupted, especially from a civilian she didn't even know, and especially in front of two Admirals from Starfleet Command. Although after taking in what her counsellor had said about the scientist, and the constant urgancy he had, she decided to hear him out and give him the time of day. Although he was not in her good books at all. She also felt thats the rantings of an old scientist was the last thing the Admirals wanted to hear after only just boarding the station. It definately was not the first thing they wished to hear. Faraness stood firm towards the old man and spoke up.

"Mr. Brackman. The Admirals have just arrived on the station," She had her personal thoughts as to what she was going to say next but kept a professionalism about herself.

"You sure do know how to get everyones attention. As Mr Greenwood here sugggested, why not simply set the self destruct?" She said the words to acknowledge the fact that she was going to listen to her senior staff's suggestions.

She then turned towards the two Admirals.

"I do apologise Admirals for the some what different then customary greeting. My name is Captain Faraness Rangwere, Commanding Officer of Vernmeton Station. This here is my XO Mr Byrne and the stations chief medical officer, Mr Greenwood, also the stations counciler Mr Andrews." She then looked down at the cybernetic dog and looked back up again. Dr. Brackman - Docking Bay 7

Brackman frowned at Rangwere. He ignored the mechanical dog, despite the fact it had just deposited fluid on him, for the sake of time.

"I should have elaborated on the experimental technologies part, I suppose," said Brackman, not budging an inch, "QAI, the AI I mentioned, has his primary processors based on my shuttle. Destroying those processors would cripple QAI and all of my research, setting me back by decades. And if you haven't noticed, I don't have decades to spare. Additionally, QAI would most likely not allow the destruction of the shuttle unless all is lost. He is a sentient AI, after all, unlike your pitiful computers. I have already been forced to destroy several breakthrough technologies because of the shuttle's current state, namely the slipstream drive, the quantum replicators, and the shuttle's power source. The resources required to reconstruct these and other items are currently unavailable. Also, with the deposing of the shuttle's power source, you'd be hard-pressed to find a way to destroy the shuttle. The shuttle has very little anti-matter on board, no torpedoes to speak of, and no warp core to overload. To be honest, I don't even know how QAI is going to destroy it if the vessel is intent on capturing it."

"Furthermore, the shuttle has invaluable information, for example, by QAI's assessments, there are only a small number of areas the Borg could realistically locate their transwarp hubs, several of which are within a reasonable distance of here. Also, my research on nanotech molecular armor is on board that shuttle, which could serve as a viable defense against Borg weaponary, which is more than I could say for anything we have now. I do not have back up copies of this research and the information is irretrievable elsewhere. This holds true for much of the research and information on board, much of which are just as critical."

"So to put it simply - self-destruct is a last-resort. Unless capture is imminent, I will do whatever I can to retrieve my shuttle. And as I see it, there is still time. I doubt you'd self-destruct this station just because of the mere chance of your crew being endangered, seeing as you already have, with the Borg and dozens of other hostile species being within easy reach. That aside, if you do not grant me permission soon, well, let's just say I'm rather willing to take matters into my own hands. I do not have time to waste, Captain, and I am not willing to waste much more. And just so we get to know each other better, I'll give you a hint into my personality - I don't make idle threats."

Brackman smiiled coldly at Rangwere, knowing intimidation would soon lose its edge and he would have to take charge of the situation really soon if she did not give in quickly.

Still emitating a dogs breathing, he looked up at Faraness, drooping one ear and put on a comical stance>

Karelia had been holding his tongue, not wishing to initiate a long conversation with Byrne if it wasn't necessary. "Been a long time Karelia," the commander said. "I see you've done well for yourself."

"You could say that," Will replied back, in an equally cautious tone. He kept his reply short, minding the festering animosity between the two officers, and his hope to keep Julia out of it.

Brackman frowned at Rangwere, not understanding how a person could be so thick-headed to the situation at hand. He followed her to her office in tense silence, trying to think of a way to show just how delicate the situation was. The officers sticking with Rangwere seemed to believe that Brackman had lost his mind, though so did most of the scientific community and more, so it wasn't a big loss. He found the cybernetic dog becoming rather irritating and idiotic, unable to control its actions and impulses. He was on the verge of deciding shoot it when the group arrived at Rangwere's office.

"Captain, he is telling he is truth. You must destroy that vessel before the Borg get hold of it, the last thing we need is for those mechanical monstrosities to become more powerful then they already are." Andrew told her, he really hated the Borg.

Brackman turned to Greenwood and looked at him with raised eyebrows.

"I believe you missed the part where I said destruction was the last-resort."

Deciding that pleaing to the officer's humanity had backfired, Brackman decided to try and change tactics. Turning back to Rangwere, he said, "It seems I need to give you a better reason to save my shuttle, not destroy it like you seem intent on doing. Apparantly, it containing my life's work means nothing. Well, I am willing to contribute my shuttle to your meager fleet so far. A list of my shuttle's capabilities are currently unavailable, seeing that much of it is damaged beyond repair, but I assure you it is not a weak vessel. It -"

Brackman was cut off by a sudden alarm from his wrist device. He raising his left arm, he turned the alarm off and asked it, "Status, QAI?"

QAI reported, "The approaching vessel has been confirmed as a Borg Sphere. Scans of vessel indicate it has sustained damage to various areas, including transwarp drive, but it is still capable of severe damage to the shuttle. Molecules have been destroyed. Isokinetic cannon has been reconfigured to work off the remaining stored power. Shields are operating at reduced efficiency. Projections indicate that, in current conditions, there is a 2.63% chance that the shuttle will not be captured or destroyed in this encounter. Estimated arrival time is now 4 hours, 30 minutes."

"Thank you, QAI," replied Brackman. He touched another button on the wrist device before lowering it and turning back toward Rangwere.

"I've served the Federation to the best of my ability," Karelia replied back. "It's expected of every officer. No exceptions."

They arrived at a set of doors that had both Karelia's and Rellek's names on them. "Thank you, Commander. We can carry on from here," he said. Once they were inside, Will set his bag down on the chair in the living room. The quarters they inhabited were larger than normal, obviously meant for multiple people or for important guests. Karelia immediately unbuttoned his outer jacket, glad to be rid of the excessively formal and uncomfortable piece of his admiral's dress uniform.

"So I'm stationed on a base with Aiden Byrne," he sighed. "If I'd known he'd be here, I might have turned down this assignment."

While trying to contain his excitement he went and sat down in the Captain's chair, running his hands across the arm rest's of the command chair, then across the command console. He let out a smile and felt very important to be given such a important position, even if it was just to watch things while they were docked.

"Lights," Byrne shouted as he walked in, weary.

Perhaps I shouldn't carry on a grudge against him....Although, if he hadn't done what he did it might be different.

Byrne made himself a cup of Chamomille tea the old Earth way; he still had a nostalgia for the pre-space flight days. He relaxed for a while.

((From the Science Lab/CSO Officer thread.))

Martin gestures with his hand for her to hold on a moment.

"Un moment Mademoiselle..." He says in a Manchester accent.

A few seconds pass as he turns book pages - finishing the chapter he's on; he looks up and nods his head at a chair, as he puts his book mark back in the book. He fixes his gaze on her and quickly analyzes her.

Hmmm, interesting; tall, well featured facade, large cranium - seemingly brilliant I would presume, but her eyes, yes, her eyes say that while she follows logic, it is a stumbling trudge no doubt. Prone to flights of emotion perchance, but through and through a person to entrust.

"Welcome Madame; tell me, do you read hard bound books like they did before electronic text became the standard? I find them quite fascinating myself; they have certain qualities that you just cannot get elsewhere - such as seeing who previously owned them, what their history was, what were they like, were they smart or dull, did they see the world as rational or irratinal, and so on so forth."

Before she answers, he gets out of his chair and strides across his office, his gait a bounce. "Caffeine, tea, or perhaps a thimble of schnappes while the Captain's not looking, eh?" He chuckles, "No no young lady, I guess I musn't play the Christian devil and tempt you with liquor."

Absent mindedly, and oblivious to the fact that she didn't get to answer, he walks back to his chair and sits down with a cup of cranberry juice. He looks at her inquiringly, waiting for her to speak - wondering perhaps if she'd suddenly gone mute.

"No sir, I have not gone mute, I am just simply listening to you. As for the books, yes I have several in my quarters that I enjoy reading very much. Specifically "Dante's Inferno", that is an amazing piece of work, no matter what century you live in. " She replied and then paused to raise an eyebrow and look at the officer.

*Stella looked him in the eyes, and nodded to herself*

"Indeed I am ruled but logic sir, but I am half betazoid, so not only did I hear that, but you are extremely correct in thinking that emotions have a way of interupting me. I'm sorry to intrude on your thoughts, it was unintentional." She said kindly

"Welcome Sir. Please, have a seat, we were just discussing family history and books. Two intriguing topics I must say." Martin glances at Meredith silently sending a thought her way,

At first glance I must say that I am skeptical if we're lucky.

He turns his head back to Meredith.

"Yes, oh yes, Dante's Inferno; Hell for every man and every man for hell. Remarkable piece of literature indeed, well beyond it's time philisophically."

"As for what your discussing, I have no interest. Just get me your reports ASAP." Urban said walking out of the room, rubbing his head, he didnt like telepath's much despite the fact he is one himself, he tried to get the resonance of the telepathy going on in that room out of his head but couldnt very effectively, but he continued to walk towards the bridge.

Martin fixes Urban with a stern gaze, "You will have your reports in due time, sir." He turns his gaze back to Meredith once Urban leaves.

He sighs, slightly weary.

"Forgive me, he was a pupil of a friend once; I'm told he tends to be pushy, commanding, and a 'tad' arrogant."

"Now, back to you." He sips his juice, "I can understand. My mother was half vulcan/half betazoid herself, and my father was half human/half klingon. Interesting gene pool combination to say the least."
