Personally, I like the tough missions. It helps shatter the "invincible Starfleet" illusion.

Anyway, those open missions you refer to are good for "posting morale". People keep coming back to post when they know it will make a difference. A fully predefined mission is usually more realistic, but less fun for the whole.

For me i'm mainly making a pile of new and fun missions. Our general 'process' when we did them at Nova was to have some major points or things that have to happen and then let the crew come in and build and improvise. In other words keep it as someone said earlier, more open ended but not all over the place. I myself am not a fan of 100 % scripted missions or roleplay. if it go's in a direction opposite of first intended its fine, let the crew have more control than those creating the mission is what i'm getting to.
