The Hope Class it a medical ship. Its design is similar to that of the Daedalus Class, with a spherical primary hull. Its weapon and defensive systems are limited, but it is equipped as a mobile hospital with starbase class facilities. The class was commissioned into service in 2362.The Hope Class was built because a medical ship was needed to rescue survivors of a battle or accident. The ship was approved in 2359 and construction of the USS Hope was completed in 2362. There have been indications that the Hope Class will serve in the fleet for many years.

The Hope class stems from a starfleet requirement issued in 2356 for a new class of medical vessel to replace the ageing Nightingale class. The new ship was to improve on the Nightingales in every respect; it would incorporate a complete Starbase level mobile hospital capable of catering for up to 1,000 patients, compared to the Nightingales 560. The warp and impulse drives, computer systems, etc. where also to be up to the latest standards.

The Nobel, which, along with the U.S.S. Excelsior-B, took part in a second-and-rescue mission for the U.S.S. Hera in 2370. The U.S.S. Pasteur, a Hope-class Federation Starship, was built at the Marin County Starfleet Yards, Skywalker division and named after the previously described U.S.S. Pasteur.

The Hope class starship were designed as a medical ship. Her large internal volume is for cargo or passenger use. These medical ships were design to evacuate crew of marooned starships, deliver refugees of war, and other humanitarian missions. Her design team gave her a new type of engine more advanced than the warp core installed in the Intrepid class but still less efficient than the Sovereign class starships. Since she was not designed for combat uses these ships were given a strong defensive system. She has a very strong deflector and shields. She was given armament as well, but these armaments wee meant for defensive uses not for combat.

Armed with only minimal weapons and shields and carrying only light sensors, Hope's talents are turned almost entirely inward, toward her hospital wings and recreational and rehabilitation facilities. Crew comforts aboard Hope class medical frigates are second only to Norway class facilities, and of course their crew leans heavily toward Starfleet's medical and life science specialties.

Starfleet chose the Hope from several proposals in 2357, and construction began on the first of the class in the same year. The ship was launched in November of 2362, and completed its shakedown successfully in 2363. Series production began at once, and sixteen ships have now joined the fleet. The Hope has proved very successful in service, and is highly popular with its crews. Their early careers where relatively uneventful, although the USS Hope herself rescued several hundred survivors from the immediate aftermath of the battle against the Borg at Wolf 359. With the Dominion war the Hopes have seen a great deal of active service, and have been responsible for saving many hundreds of lives.
