Do you choose to go through the Deep Space Academy?

The Academy is a must in order to start out at an officer rank of Ensign or above, bypassing the Academy allows you to go right into duty at an enlisted rank of Crewman to begin with.

The path of bypassing the academy, it is possible to make Ensign eventually, but not remotely as short of a time as going through the academy takes.
