To apply for the Bridge Commander's test, one must currently hold the minimum rank of Lieutenant, and have no outstanding reprimands on one's record.

Until the test is passed, one cannot hold any rank above that of Lieutenant Commander, nor may one hold a permanent command position, such as Commanding or Executive Officer.
